What is PrEP & How Does it Work?

Comprehensive FAQ
What is PrEP?
PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a daily medication for HIV-negative individuals to prevent HIV infection. When taken as prescribed, it reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99%.
Who should consider taking PrEP?
PrEP is recommended for individuals at higher risk of HIV exposure, including those with multiple sexual partners, inconsistent condom use, or partners whose HIV status is unknown.
What medical tests are required before taking PrEP?
Before starting PrEP, you must test negative for HIV. As a general medical guideline, doctors also require tests for Liver and Kidney functions (eGFR) and Hepatitis B. Please note that your doctor may differ and request additional tests based on your individual health profile.
Daily vs. On-Demand (Event-Driven) PrEP?
Daily PrEP means taking one pill every day, offering constant protection.
On-Demand (2-1-1) means taking 2 pills 2-24 hours before sex, 1 pill 24 hours after the first dose, and 1 pill 24 hours after the second. Note: On-Demand is ONLY recommended for cisgender men who have sex with men and MUST be discussed with your doctor.
Does PrEP protect against other STDs?
No. PrEP only protects against HIV. It does not prevent syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, or other sexually transmitted diseases. Consistent condom use is highly recommended for comprehensive STD protection.
Are there side effects?
Most people experience no side effects. A small percentage may experience mild nausea, headaches, or stomach pain in the first few weeks, which typically subsides as your body adjusts.
Is it legal to import PrEP into Taiwan? How long does it take?
Yes. Under Taiwan FDA regulations, individuals may import up to a 6-month supply of personal medication provided they have a valid doctor's prescription. The TFDA approval process takes 3 to 4 weeks on average. PrEPAsia handles this entire import declaration for you.
